Brief History of FC Elmstead
Founded as Elmstead Rovers in 1958, the club adopted the name FC Elmstead in 1964 and has grown from a single adult side into a thriving community football club with a proud tradition of developing young players. Several footballers have progressed through the club’s ranks into the professional game, including Lee Martin, Colin Foster, Mickey Pay and Grant Basey.
After decades of success in local football, FC Elmstead took the step into senior football in 2015 following promotion from the Kent County League to the Kent Invicta League. The following season, league restructuring saw the club become members of the newly formed Southern Counties East Football League First Division, where they have remained ever since.
The Covid-interrupted seasons of 2019/20 and 2020/21 halted the club’s progress, but FC Elmstead produced one of the finest moments in its history by winning the London Senior Trophy in 2021. Having lost their manager and much of the playing squad just weeks earlier, the club defied the odds to defeat Forest Hill Park 2-1 in the final.
Steady progress has continued in recent seasons, with the club recording successive top-half finishes before ending the 2025/26 campaign in seventh place. Ahead of the 2026/27 season, manager Brehnan Chidley remains in charge as FC Elmstead begins an exciting new chapter by moving to the Longmead Stadium, home of Tonbridge Angels.
Although the first team now plays at Longmead, the club’s home remains Walden Recreation Ground in Chislehurst, where its famous scarlet and sky-blue colours—and the Minorca Cockerel club badge—continue to represent one of Kent’s long-established community football clubs.
