Fisher FC – A History
Fisher FC traces its origins back to 1908, when the Fisher Catholic Club for Boys was founded in Bermondsey to provide sporting and recreational opportunities for local young people. Named after St John Fisher, the club developed through local leagues before reforming in 1965 and beginning its rise through senior football.
The club joined the Spartan League in 1974, winning back-to-back league titles in 1980/81 and 1981/82 before moving to the newly built Surrey Docks Stadium. Fisher continued their rapid progress, winning the Southern League Southern Division at the first attempt before claiming the Southern League Premier Division title in 1986/87 to earn promotion to the Football Conference. The club also reached the First Round of the FA Cup on two occasions during the 1980s.
After several successful years in non-league’s higher reaches, financial problems eventually caught up with Fisher Athletic, and the club was wound up in May 2009.
Supporters responded immediately by forming a supporters’ trust and establishing Fisher FC, ensuring football continued in Bermondsey. The reborn club competed in the Kent League before working towards a return to its spiritual home, with plans for a new community ground at St Paul’s Sports Ground becoming a reality in 2016.
Following relegation to the SCEFL First Division in 2016/17, Fisher bounced back immediately under Dean Harrison, earning promotion at the first attempt before finishing an impressive third in the Premier Division the following season. Ajay Ashanike later guided the club through the Covid-19 interrupted campaigns and established the Fish as consistent Premier Division competitors.
Recent seasons have seen Fisher emerge as genuine promotion contenders. A fourth-place finish in 2024/25 was followed by victory over FA Vase winners Whitstable Town in the play-off semi-finals before suffering a narrow defeat to VCD Athletic in the final. The club went even better in the league in 2025/26, finishing second, but their promotion hopes were ended by eventual winners Punjab United in the play-off semi-finals.
With back-to-back play-off campaigns behind them, Fisher will once again be targeting a long-awaited return to Step 4 during the 2026/27 season.
