Croydon FC – A History
Founded in 1953 as Croydon Amateurs, the club was established to provide senior amateur football at the newly built Croydon Sports Arena. After beginning life in the Surrey Senior League, Croydon quickly established itself as an ambitious club, winning the Spartan League before moving into the Athenian League, where the Division Two title was secured in 1966.
The club joined the Isthmian League in 1974 and enjoyed one of the most successful periods in its history under manager Ted Shepherd. Promotion to the Premier Division followed in 1975/76, while Croydon reached the Second Round of the FA Cup in 1979/80, eventually losing a replay to Millwall. The club also lifted the Surrey Senior Cup in 1982 and achieved its highest-ever league finish of fourth in the Isthmian Premier Division in 1986.
Financial difficulties and the redevelopment of the Croydon Sports Arena led to a difficult period during the 1990s before local businessman Ken Jarvie helped secure the club’s future. Promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division followed in 2000, along with success in the London Senior Cup and Full Members Cup, before league restructuring eventually saw Croydon become members of the Southern Counties East Football League.
Following relegation to the First Division in 2019, the Covid-interrupted seasons delayed the club’s rebuilding, but under Liam Giles the Trams returned to challenging at the top end of the table. The 2023/24 season saw Croydon reach the Kent Senior Trophy Final before lifting the London Senior Trophy, while back-to-back play-off finishes followed in 2024/25 and 2025/26, both ending in semi-final defeats to SE Dons.
Managed again by Ryan Watts and Alex White, Croydon enters the 2026/27 season looking to build on consecutive play-off campaigns and challenge once again for promotion back to the Premier Division.
