The weather once again played its part in the First Division, with two fixtures falling victim to waterlogged pitches, but the bigger story came from the results that did go ahead — and particularly from the points dropped by the leading challengers. With SE Dons not in action, the door was open for those chasing them to close the gap. Instead, it was the leaders who emerged as the biggest beneficiaries of the afternoon.
Rochester United came closest to taking advantage but were denied in dramatic fashion at Lydd Town. The visitors looked to have done enough after goals from William Currie, Jack Church and Lucas Payne put them in control, but Lydd refused to fold. Leo Dodds, introduced from the bench, struck twice late on — including a stoppage-time equaliser — to rescue a 3–3 draw and spark celebrations among the home side. The drama continued right at the end as Payne was sent off, rounding off a frustrating afternoon for Rochester. They remain eight points behind SE Dons, albeit with four games still in hand.
AFC Greenwich Borough were also unable to fully capitalise. They needed a late own goal to salvage a 1–1 draw at home to Staplehurst Monarchs, who had taken the lead deep into first-half stoppage time through substitute Jerome Lee. Borough pushed for a response and eventually found it when Scott Jones inadvertently turned the ball into his own net ten minutes from time. It means Greenwich remain 11 points off the summit, also with four games in hand, but it was another opportunity missed to apply real pressure.
In the race for the play-offs, Croydon strengthened their position with a solid 2–1 win away at Sheppey Sports. Kanan Fitton struck twice to secure the points and keep the Trams firmly inside the top five, while Sheppey’s hopes of breaking into those positions took a knock despite Jack Marsh briefly bringing them level. Just behind them, FC Elmstead saw their own play-off push slowed by a late setback as Bridon Ropes snatched a 1–1 draw through Manny Oshinowo’s penalty after Jack Hyslop had given the hosts the lead. For Bridon, the point was valuable, lifting them out of the relegation places.
Elsewhere there was relief for Lewisham Borough, who finally ended a long wait for victory by beating Tooting Bec 2–1. Having fallen behind to a Benjamin Robinson penalty, Lewisham responded strongly in the second half with quickfire goals from Nicholas Harvey and Jeffery Oredein. The result ended a 13-game winless run and lifted them several places clear of immediate danger. Greenways also enjoyed a welcome return to winning ways, edging past Halls AFC 1–0 thanks to Joe Thomas, who scored just two minutes into his debut to secure their first victory in six games.
With Banstead Athletic v Welling Town and Chessington & Hook v Lordswood both postponed, the bottom three sides never had the chance to influence matters this weekend. But across the division the main takeaway was clear — with both title challengers dropping points, SE Dons tightened their grip on top spot without even kicking a ball.
