We’re into the final stretch now, and Saturday feels like one of those days where everything could shift at once – title, play-offs, survival… the lot.
At the top, it’s a straight shootout. AFC Greenwich Borough and SE Dons are separated by just a single point, and both face very different kinds of pressure. Borough have the tougher fixture on paper, travelling to 3rd-placed Rochester United. Rochester may be out of the title race, but they’re more than capable of playing spoiler – and they’ve already shown they can mix it with the very best. If Borough slip here, it could be costly.
SE Dons, meanwhile, head to Welling Town knowing exactly what’s required. Welling must win to keep their survival hopes alive, which makes them dangerous – desperation tends to do that. But if the Dons handle the occasion, it’s the kind of fixture champions win.
At the bottom, it’s all getting very tight. Chessington & Hook are still rooted to the foot and running out of time. They travel to SC Thamesmead, who aren’t safe yet but know a win or two would just about do it. That makes this a massive game for both – one chasing survival, the other trying to avoid being dragged back in.
Lewisham Borough are also in the drop zone and face a tricky trip to Sheppey Sports. Lewisham need points, simple as that, but Sheppey are enjoying a strong finish and won’t make life easy.
Then there’s a proper six-pointer between Lydd Town and Bridon Ropes. Both sit just above the line, both know a win would go a long way towards safety, and both know defeat could drag them right back into trouble. Expect nerves, tackles, and probably a few heart rates hitting dangerous levels.
Tooting Bec aren’t mathematically safe either, but a win at Halls AFC would just about get the job done. Given their recent run, though, nothing feels guaranteed – and Halls will be looking to take advantage.
At the top end, the play-off race could take a decisive turn. Croydon (5th) host Greenways (6th) in what is essentially a shootout for that final spot. A Croydon win, and you’d think that’s job done. A Greenways victory, and suddenly the pressure flips completely.
Lordswood, sitting 4th, are in great form and head to FC Elmstead looking to make it five wins on the spin. Another three points here could all but secure their play-off place, but Elmstead will be keen to show why for so long they were also in the promotion conversation.
Elsewhere, Staplehurst Monarchs host Banstead Athletic. Staplehurst are finishing strongly with little pressure, while Banstead look safe after a good run but know that 3 points will make them sleep easier.
So, as we head into Saturday, the situation is simple:
Win, and you’re in control.
Lose, and you’re sweating.
