First Division: Five Games Across Three Nights
After a weekend dominated by FA Vase action, attention returns to the SCEFL First Division with five league fixtures spread across Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
There are important points on offer at both ends of the table, with leaders Lordswood and second-placed Rochester United both in action on Tuesday before FC Elmstead and Staplehurst Monarchs complete the midweek programme on Wednesday.
BRIDON ROPES 2-5 SC THAMESMEAD
SHEPPEY SPORTS 1-0 GREENWAYS
SC Thamesmead are the new leaders of the SCEFL First Division after producing a remarkable comeback at Bridon Ropes, while ten-man Sheppey Sports grabbed their first league victory with a stoppage-time winner.
Things initially looked very different for Thamesmead as Bridon Ropes raced into a 2-0 lead through Maxim Taflaj after 33 minutes and Yedidja Kossi on 41.
But the visitors responded almost immediately, Owen Jeavons pulling one back in the 43rd minute before levelling with his second on 64.
From there Thamesmead took control. Jamie Williams made it 3-2 three minutes later, before two goals deep into stoppage time from Riley Butler (90+5′) and Andrea Carrera (90+9′) completed a remarkable 5-2 victory.
The win takes Thamesmead onto 13 points with a +8 goal difference, moving them above Lordswood and Rochester United at the top of the table.
There was late drama in Monday’s other game as Sheppey Sports recorded their first league win of the season, beating Greenways 1-0.
Sheppey’s task became considerably harder when Joshua Spencer was sent off in the 79th minute, but the ten men kept going and were rewarded in the fifth minute of stoppage time, when Jack O’Neill struck the winner.
The victory lifts Sheppey off the bottom and up to 12th on six points.
Attention now turns to Tuesday night, when Lordswood host Lydd Town and Rochester United travel to Minster – with both starting the evening knowing victory would take them back above Thamesmead.
LORDSWOOD 6-0 LYDD TOWN
MINSTER 1-2 ROCHESTER UNITED
Lordswood returned to the top of the SCEFL First Division in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night, while two late goals earned Rochester United a dramatic victory at Minster.
Lordswood started the evening behind Monday night leaders SC Thamesmead, but reclaimed top spot with an impressive 6-0 victory over Lydd Town.
Harvey Welford opened the scoring in the 32nd minute to give the hosts a 1-0 half-time advantage, before Lordswood took complete control after the break.
Welford grabbed his second on 52 minutes, Callum Peck made it three on 68 and Rameses Meseorisa struck twice, in the 74th and 82nd minutes. Josh Carter completed the scoring in stoppage time.
The six-goal victory takes Lordswood onto 16 points from seven games and gives them a healthy +13 goal difference at the summit.
There was a very different route to three points for Rochester United, who came from behind to beat Minster 2-1 at Hartsdown Park.
After a goalless first half, Bobby Hulme put Minster ahead in the 54th minute, and that advantage remained intact as the game entered its closing stages.
Rochester, though, produced a dramatic late turnaround.
Kevin Dance equalised in the 86th minute before, just two minutes later, Connor Watson struck to put United 2-1 ahead and complete the comeback.
The victory ends Rochester’s run of three league games without a win and keeps them level with Lordswood on 16 points, although Lordswood’s superior goal difference keeps them top.
After SC Thamesmead briefly took over at the summit on Monday, Tuesday’s results mean Lordswood and Rochester have both moved three points clear on 16, with Thamesmead third on 13.
Croydon and perfect four-from-four Hythe Town are next on 12, with games in hand ensuring the battle at the top remains very much alive.
The week’s First Division action concludes on Wednesday night when FC Elmstead host Staplehurst Monarchs.
FC ELMSTEAD 2-3 STAPLEHURST MONARCHS
Staplehurst Monarchs moved up to fourth in the SCEFL First Division after coming from two goals down to claim a 3-2 victory at FC Elmstead on Wednesday night.
Elmstead made an excellent start at Longmead Stadium and went ahead after 28 minutes when Jamie Fearn converted from the penalty spot.
The hosts doubled their advantage through Finley Williams in the 37th minute and looked well placed to take a 2-0 lead into the interval.
Staplehurst, though, found a crucial response in first-half stoppage time. Timmy Babbington struck in the 45+2nd minute to halve the deficit and completely change the complexion of the game heading into the break.
The Monarchs carried that momentum into the second half, with Manny Cuttress equalising in the 49th minute.
Having trailed 2-0, Staplehurst completed the turnaround when Babbington scored his second of the evening in the 61st minute, putting the visitors 3-2 ahead.
This time there was no way back for Elmstead, as Staplehurst held on to complete an impressive comeback and take all three points.
The victory moves the Monarchs onto 13 points from six games, level with third-placed SC Thamesmead and just three points behind joint leaders Lordswood and Rochester United.
For Elmstead, it was a frustrating evening after establishing that two-goal advantage. They remain 14th with five points from seven matches.
Wednesday’s result completes the week’s First Division programme, which produced five games, 20 goals and five outright winners across the three nights.
