First Division Preview: Five Games Across Three Nights
After a weekend dominated by FA Vase action, attention returns to the SCEFL First Division with five league fixtures spread across Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
There are important points on offer at both ends of the table, with leaders Lordswood and second-placed Rochester United both in action on Tuesday before FC Elmstead and Staplehurst Monarchs complete the midweek programme on Wednesday.
Bridon Ropes v SC Thamesmead
Bridon Ropes return to league action looking to climb away from the lower reaches of the table. They currently sit 16th with four points from six games, although their last league outing produced plenty of goals in a narrow 3-2 defeat at Halls AFC.
They face an SC Thamesmead side sitting fifth on ten points. Thamesmead have already scored 16 league goals – the highest total in the Division – but their last outing ended in a surprising 4-1 home defeat against Minster.
A win for Thamesmead would take them onto 13 points and right into the group at the top of the table.
Sheppey Sports v Greenways
Sheppey Sports are the only side yet to record a league victory and currently sit bottom, although three draws from four games show they have proved difficult to beat.
Their most recent league outing brought a useful point from a 1-1 draw at unbeaten Croydon.
Greenways make the trip sitting ninth with eight points from seven matches. They were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Hythe Town last time out, with a late penalty denying them a point against the Division’s only remaining 100% side.
Lordswood v Lydd Town
The league leaders return to action when Lordswood welcome Lydd Town.
Lordswood moved to the summit with a 1-0 victory at Lewisham Borough in their last league game and have collected 13 points from six matches. They also boast the best defensive record in the Division, having conceded only three times.
Lydd Town sit 11th on seven points. They have drawn four of their seven matches so far, including a 1-1 result at Banstead Athletic last time out.
With Rochester also playing on Tuesday night, Lordswood will be looking to strengthen their position at the top.
Minster v Rochester United
There is another intriguing contest at Hartsdown Park as Minster host Rochester United.
Minster produced one of the standout results of the previous league weekend when they travelled to SC Thamesmead and returned with an impressive 4-1 victory. That lifted the SCEFL newcomers to tenth with seven points from five matches.
Rochester, meanwhile, will be looking to halt a sudden change in fortunes.
Four successive victories gave United a perfect start and put them top of the early table, but they have taken just one point from their last three league games. A 5-1 defeat at Lewisham was followed by a goalless draw with Lordswood before bottom-placed FC Elmstead stunned them 2-0 last time out.
Despite that run, Rochester remain second on 13 points and level with Lordswood. Victory at Minster could therefore put them back at the summit depending on events elsewhere.
With Lordswood and Rochester level on points at the top, SC Thamesmead looking to join them on 13 and Sheppey searching for that elusive first victory, there is plenty at stake across the two nights of First Division action.
FC Elmstead v Staplehurst Monarchs
The week’s First Division action concludes at Longmead Stadium as FC Elmstead host Staplehurst Monarchs.
Elmstead will be looking to build on their best result of the season so far. They went into their last league fixture bottom of the table and without a victory, but produced a major upset by beating then-leaders Rochester United 2-0, with Jamie Fearn and Frankie Driscoll scoring the goals.
That lifted Elmstead to 13th with five points from six matches.
Staplehurst Monarchs remain very much involved towards the top of the table. Three straight victories gave them a perfect start before defeat against SC Thamesmead, while a goalless draw with Stansfeld last time out took them onto ten points from five games.
With games in hand on several of the clubs above them, three points on Wednesday could move the Monarchs firmly back amongst the early leaders.
With Lordswood and Rochester level on points at the top, SC Thamesmead looking to join them on 13, Sheppey searching for their first victory and Staplehurst aiming to make the most of their games in hand, there is plenty at stake across three nights of First Division football.
