Erith & Belvedere 0-2 Bearsted
On a freezing, rain-soaked night in Welling, Bearsted produced a composed and clinical display to beat Erith & Belvedere and climb into third place in the SCEFL Premier Division table.
With both sides locked on points before kick-off and separated only by goal difference in the race for the play-offs, there was plenty on the line. Bearsted, however, handled the occasion better.
Michael Hagan threatened early for the visitors after being slipped in by Jarred Trespaderne, but Danny Alexander reacted well to turn his effort behind. At the other end, Scott Jarvis fired over and Tom Borders forced an excellent reaction save from Frankie Leonard as the hosts looked to respond.
Just before the half-hour, the breakthrough arrived. Reuben Jones found space down the right and played Jake Embery through on goal. Embery kept his cool and finished clinically past Alexander to hand the Bears a deserved lead.
Erith & Belvedere tried to hit back before the break. Freddie Cray blazed over from distance and Borders saw a promising opening snuffed out by a superb last-ditch clearance from Jones. Hagan and Trespaderne both went close for Bearsted as the visitors looked to press home their advantage.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Freddie Baker tested Leonard soon after the restart, while Cray wasted a good opportunity by firing over after neat build-up play. Hagan nearly capitalised on hesitancy in the home defence with a cheeky chip that drifted just wide of the far angle.
Leonard was called into action again to deny Casey Dudley, tipping over from the edge of the box, before Erith squandered a glorious chance to level when Sam Stace fired wide of an unguarded net from distance with Alexander stranded upfield.
With seven minutes remaining, Bearsted made the points safe. After a scramble inside the penalty area, Phil Headley’s powerful strike was parried by Alexander but only into the path of substitute Billy Lewins, who reacted quickest to bundle home from close range.
Further chances came and went at both ends, but the damage was done. Bearsted saw it out professionally to secure a crucial three points — a win that lifts them into third place, while the Deres slip down a spot on goal difference.
Cold night. Big result. The Bears mean business.
