Several bus routes serve the area but the 492 bus stops directly outside the ground.
Barnehurst Station is located 10 minutes walk away from the ground and is the preferred option for many fans. It is Travelcard Zone 5. Trains run frequently from Central London.
There’s ample parking available on roads surrounding The Christopher Russell Stadium but surrounding roads can be busy.
PHOENIX SPORTS …. a brief history
Founded in 1935, Phoenix Sports originally began life as St John’s Welling before becoming Lakeside. Following the Second World War, the club adopted the name Phoenix, symbolising its rise from the devastation of the Blitz. Since 1950, the club has been based at Mayplace Road East, where generations of players have represented Phoenix in both football and cricket.
After progressing through a number of local leagues, Phoenix joined the Spartan League in 1986 before returning to the Kent County League, where they continued to develop both on and off the pitch. League titles and promotions followed, eventually leading to the club becoming founder members of the Kent Invicta League in 2011, then the highest level the club had reached.
A runners-up finish in their inaugural campaign was followed by league title success in 2012/13 under Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham, earning promotion to the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division. Phoenix quickly established themselves at Step 5, finishing sixth in their first season before an outstanding 2014/15 campaign saw them crowned SCEFL Champions. During that memorable season, the club also reached the Fourth Round Proper of the FA Vase before losing to eventual winners North Shields.
Promotion to the Isthmian League followed, where Phoenix spent seven seasons, recording a highest finish of eighth before relegation back to the SCEFL in 2021/22.
The return proved short-lived as Steve O’Boyle guided the club to second place in 2022/23 before Ryan Hayes’ dramatic injury-time winner secured promotion in the play-off final against VCD Athletic. Phoenix spent one season back in the Isthmian League before local businessman Tony Crowder took over the club ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. Despite Darren Anslow’s appointment as manager, relegation followed after a difficult season.
Jake Goodman took over as player-manager for the club’s return to the SCEFL and guided Phoenix to a respectable ninth-place finish in 2025/26. With a settled squad and renewed optimism around Mayplace Road, the club will be aiming to challenge for an immediate return to the Isthmian League during the 2026/27 season.
