First Division Preview: Lordswood and Hythe Clash in Top-of-the-Table Showdown

A full programme of nine matches awaits in the SCEFL First Division on Saturday, with several important fixtures at both ends of the table. The standout encounter sees second-placed Lordswood host fourth-placed Hythe Town in a meeting between two of the division’s leading promotion contenders.

Lordswood and Hythe Town have both made impressive starts to the campaign, and Saturday’s meeting promises to be one of the most intriguing fixtures of the season so far.

Lordswood sit second with 22 points from ten games, just three behind leaders Rochester United, and boast the division’s most prolific attack with 31 goals scored. They also have the best defensive record, having conceded just eight times, and come into the game following a convincing 6-1 victory over Halls AFC in their last league outing.

Hythe, meanwhile, have been outstanding since dropping into the First Division. They won their opening six league matches before finally dropping points in a 2-2 draw at Staplehurst Monarchs. With 19 points from just seven games, Andy Crush’s side have several matches in hand on the teams around them and remain very well placed in the promotion race.

Something will have to give on Saturday, with Lordswood looking to strengthen their position near the summit and Hythe aiming to maintain their unbeaten record.

League leaders  Rochester United  will be hoping to take advantage of whatever happens between their closest challengers when they welcome bottom club Banstead Athletic.

Rochester lead the table with 25 points from 12 matches and returned to winning ways last week with a 4-2 victory at Staplehurst Monarchs. Banstead, by contrast, have endured a difficult start and remain bottom with just four points. Their latest setback came in a 3-1 defeat at Bridon Ropes, leaving them with nine losses from their opening 11 fixtures.

Another fascinating contest takes place at Minster, where the hosts welcome third-placed Stansfeld.

Stansfeld have climbed the table following an excellent run of results, most recently defeating Lewisham Borough 2-0 after recording a 4-0 midweek victory at Halls. They now sit third on 20 points, while Minster are eighth with 17 points and will be looking to respond to their heavy 4-0 defeat at Sheppey Sports.

Croydon will be aiming to keep pace with the leading group when they host Staplehurst Monarchs. Croydon currently occupy fifth place on 18 points and have been among the division’s highest scorers, hitting six without reply against Lydd Town in their most recent league game. Staplehurst sit ninth on 15 points and will be determined to bounce back from their defeat against Rochester.

Sixth-placed SC Thamesmead travel to Tooting Bec looking to recover from a surprise 1-0 defeat at Halls AFC. Thamesmead have scored 26 league goals this season but have suffered three defeats in ten games, while Tooting will be hoping to improve on their current position of 13th.

At Ladywell Arena, Lewisham Borough entertain Halls AFC, with both teams looking for a positive response to contrasting recent results. Lewisham suffered a 2-0 defeat at Stansfeld on Wednesday, while Halls produced one of the midweek surprises by defeating SC Thamesmead 1-0. The visitors have moved up to 15th place and will be keen to build on that result.

There is an interesting encounter at Longmead Stadium as FC Elmstead host Greenways, with just one point separating the two sides in mid-table. Greenways sit tenth with 13 points, while Elmstead are 12th on 12 points. Both teams will see this as an opportunity to make progress towards the top half.

At the opposite end of the table, Bridon Ropes welcome Welling Town in another significant fixture in the battle to avoid the relegation places.

Bridon enjoyed a much-needed victory last Saturday, with Yedidja Kossi scoring a hat-trick in their 3-1 success against Banstead Athletic. That result lifted them to 14th on eight points, while Welling remain 17th with five points, although they have played four fewer matches than their hosts.

Finally, Lydd Town face Sheppey Sports at the Lindsey Field. Lydd have struggled for results in recent weeks and sit 16th with seven points, while Sheppey have enjoyed a more productive October, recording consecutive league victories against Banstead Athletic and Minster. Their 4-0 success over Minster on Monday lifted them to 11th place, with games in hand on several clubs above them.

With the leading clubs facing important tests and valuable points available at the bottom, Saturday promises another compelling afternoon of First Division football.

All nine matches kick off at 3pm.
