First Division Preview: Big Games at Both Ends of the Table
The SCEFL First Division continues on Saturday with seven fixtures on the schedule, as three clubs turn their attention to London Senior Trophy action.
With the promotion race beginning to take shape and the battle at the bottom becoming increasingly important, there is plenty at stake across the division.
One of the standout fixtures sees Lordswood host Croydon, with both sides looking to strengthen their positions among the leading clubs. Lordswood sit second on 25 points, three behind leaders Rochester United, and will be looking to build on last weekend’s narrow victory at SC Thamesmead. Croydon arrive in fifth place, four points behind their hosts, having recorded an impressive 3-0 win over Tooting Bec last Saturday. A victory for either side would provide a significant boost to their promotion ambitions.
Leaders Rochester United travel to Lydd Town knowing that another three points would keep them firmly in control at the top. Rochester have collected 28 points from 13 games, while Lydd find themselves at the opposite end of the standings, sitting bottom on seven points. The home side will be desperate to turn their fortunes around, although they face a difficult challenge against a Rochester team that has won nine league matches already this season.
Hythe Town visit FC Elmstead with their unbeaten league record still intact. Hythe have won seven and drawn one of their eight matches, leaving them fourth despite having played considerably fewer games than the teams around them. Elmstead, currently 11th, will be looking to respond to last weekend’s narrow defeat at Welling Town, but they face opponents who have already demonstrated their attacking strength with 24 goals in just eight league outings.
Third-placed Stansfeld travel to Greenways aiming to continue their impressive recent form. Stansfeld’s 4-1 victory over Sheppey Sports last weekend moved them onto 24 points, just one behind second-placed Lordswood. Greenways also enjoyed success on Saturday, defeating Lewisham Borough 1-0, and will be hoping to claim another notable result against one of the division’s leading sides.
At Hartsdown Park, Minster welcome Welling Town with both clubs looking to build on victories last weekend. Minster’s 1-0 success at Halls lifted them into sixth place on 21 points, keeping them firmly in touch with the promotion contenders. Welling Town also collected a valuable three points with a 1-0 victory over FC Elmstead, moving them up to 15th. Another positive result would help Welling put further distance between themselves and the relegation places.
Sheppey Sports host Tooting Bec in a meeting between two sides separated by just one point in the standings. Sheppey sit 12th with 12 points from nine games, while Tooting are 14th with 11 points from ten. Both suffered defeats last weekend and will see Saturday as an opportunity to get back on track and move towards the middle of the table.
Finally, Staplehurst Monarchs entertain Halls AFC, with the hosts looking to recover from their surprise 1-0 defeat at Banstead Athletic last Saturday. Staplehurst remain eighth on 18 points and have games in hand on several teams above them. Halls, meanwhile, sit 16th with eight points following their defeat to Minster and will be determined to improve their position as the pressure increases towards the foot of the division.
With Rochester leading the way, Lordswood and Stansfeld in pursuit, and unbeaten Hythe Town holding several games in hand, the promotion race remains wide open. Saturday’s fixtures offer another opportunity for the leading contenders to make their mark, while those further down the table have valuable points to fight for.
