Punjab United win 4-3 on penalties
Two in-form sides battled for the biggest prize in their histories as Rusthall hosted Punjab United in the SCEFL Premier Division play-off final — and it took 120 minutes plus penalties to finally separate them.
After a gruelling contest in front of nearly 1,500 spectators, it was Punjab United who held their nerve in the shoot-out to secure promotion to Step Four for the first time.
As expected with so much on the line, the game began cautiously. Louie Clarke had the first sight of goal after winning the ball high up the pitch, but Punjab’s defence reacted quickly and his effort flew over. Chances were scarce, though Rusthall came closest midway through the half. Yassin Fares rounded Mitch Beeney and looked certain to score, only for the Punjab goalkeeper to recover brilliantly and divert the ball onto the post. Clarke reacted quickest to the rebound, but Beeney was judged to have control as the ball was forced home, and the goal was ruled out.
Clarke later fired straight at Beeney, while at the other end Serine Sanneh dealt comfortably with a Steven Ratcliff header in a tight first half.
The second period followed a similar pattern, with both sides probing but struggling to create clear chances. Sanneh saved from Wayne Bushell, Ian Anderson fired over, and Charlie Clover blazed high after being allowed to advance. Chris Edwards tested Sanneh from distance and nearly caught him out with an ambitious long-range effort after intercepting a pass, but the Rusthall goalkeeper recovered well.
As the game edged towards extra time, Rusthall pushed for a breakthrough. Clover poked just wide from a Josh Reid cross, Reid himself shot straight at Beeney, and Anderson saw a free-kick tipped over. Beeney also held onto a late Dan Blunn header to ensure the deadlock remained.
Extra time finally brought the breakthrough. Just before the interval, Reid controlled a difficult cross-field pass brilliantly, skipped past his man, and cut the ball back for Ayodeji Owoeye to slot home from 15 yards.
Rusthall looked to press home their advantage, but Beeney denied Owoeye again early in the second period of extra time. Punjab, who had been kept largely quiet, began to find a way back. Jack Hopkins went close with a header before the equaliser arrived with five minutes remaining — a cross evaded Sanneh and William Johnson-Cole was on hand to finish.
Punjab were then reduced to ten men when Hopkins received a second yellow card late on, but Rusthall couldn’t make the extra man count. Owoeye had one final opportunity, but again Beeney stood firm, sending the tie to penalties.
In the shoot-out, Beeney set the tone by confidently converting the first kick himself. A nervy sequence followed, with several misses and saves, before controversy struck as Sanneh saved from Johnson-Cole only for the effort to be retaken due to encroachment — the Punjab man making no mistake second time around.
Fares and Jack Kirby converted for Rusthall, while Chris Edwards kept Punjab level. Sanneh then produced another save, this time denying Harry Ottaway, and Josh Reid scored to keep Rusthall alive. After five penalties each, it was locked at 3-3.
Zak Bryon gave Punjab the advantage, and when Reuel Powell-Downey’s effort was saved by Beeney, it sparked wild celebrations.
After a marathon contest, Punjab United had their moment — promotion secured in the most dramatic fashion.
