Glebe defender signs for Southampton

Southampton have announced the signing of highly-rated Glebe defender Nico Lawrence on an 18th month contract.

The 19-year-old centre-back will join the Premier Division club’s B team after impressing during a recent trial period.

Nico has started 6 league games for Glebe this year and scored in their recent win over Sheppey United.

He is the latest prospect to move to a League club having passed through the ranks at Foxbury following on from the likes of Emile Smith-Rowe, Mitchell Pinnock, Lyle Taylor and Zak Lovelace among others.

“I feel excited. Delighted to be honest,” said Lawrence. “I’m just hoping we can try and push and achieve things with this team.

“I felt like Southampton has a better pathway than most clubs. Facility-wise it’s good as well. I feel like it will be a great opportunity for me to push on and show what I can do.

“I would say I’m very technical, like to head the ball as well. Over the last couple of weeks I feel like I’ve settled in quite well with the lads.

“Every game I play I want to improve and hopefully try and push for the first team. I’d like to make as many appearances as possible.”

Harry Hudson thinks it’s a great move for the young defender.

“Really happy that Glebe was able to give Nico the platform to play senior football and come up against a different type of challenge. He’s developed & adapted really, really quickly. I’m proud of him!”

“Now he’s making the step into a cat 1 academy & if he carries on the development he’s had then I have no reason not to think he won’t go all the way. It’s fantastic that Glebe can have a strong season on the pitch while also providing a platform for players into a pro club!”

Glebe are third in the Premier Division table and battling away for promotion but next up for them is a Kent FA Senior Trophy semi-final against Sheppey United this Saturday.
