FA Cup Preliminary Round – Saturday 24th August

Beckenham Town 0-1 Ashford United
Bridon Ropes 2-7 Chichester City
Chertsey Town 5-1 Erith and Belvedere
Haywards Heath Town 2-1 Tunbridge Wells
Herne Bay 2-2 AFC Croydon Athletic
Sheppey United 3-1 Glebe
South Park 2-1 Canterbury City
Sutton Athletic 6-0 Ashford Town

Sutton Athletic caused the shock of the whole round by smashing their way past Step 4 side Ashford Town at the London Hire Ground. The SCEFL side were ruthless, racking up a 6-0 win with goals from John Woodcock, Chris McGinty x2, Jon Murray, Conor Evans and Joby Smith. They will now look forward to Tuesday’s draw with great anticipation and must be one of a very few teams to have played in but never lost an FA Cup game.
Sheppey United will join Sutton in the hat after coming through their all-SCEFL encounter with Glebe. A Dan Bradshaw double was the difference between the sides as the visitors battled away but couldn’t claw back their hosts early lead.
AFC Croydon will have mixed feelings after taking Herne Bay to a replay today. The Rams raced in to a two goal lead but the prolific Zak Ansah pulled a first back before hitting a last minute leveller to mean the sides do it all again on Tuesday week.
Beckenham Town were narrow losers to Ashford United as were Tunbridge Wells who felt hard done by when losing at Haywards Heath Town. Canterbury City led but lost to Step 4 side South Park while Erith & Belvedere suffered a painful second half against FA Vase winners Chertsey Town. The entertainment value was high with 9 goals scored at the Meridian Sports Club but most of them went to Chichester City and Bridon Ropes journey is now over at the second hurdle.
