Stansfeld – A Brief History of the Club

Founded in 1897, Stansfeld FC is one of London’s oldest community football clubs. Established by Oxford graduate Dr John Stansfeld to provide opportunities for young people in Bermondsey, the club has remained true to those values for well over a century and continues to play an important role within the local community.

The club enjoyed tremendous success in the Kent County League, winning numerous league titles over several decades and establishing itself as one of the competition’s most successful sides. Following the takeover of Southern Counties East Football League club Eltham Palace in 2016, the first team adopted the Stansfeld name ahead of the 2017/18 season and embarked on a new chapter in senior football.

Steady progress followed, with the club enjoying its best-ever FA Vase run in 2020/21 by reaching the Second Round Proper, while also making its FA Cup debut. Greater success arrived a year later when Stansfeld were crowned SCEFL First Division Champions in 2021/22, earning promotion to the Premier Division. That memorable season also included a run to the Last 16 of the FA Vase, where they were narrowly eliminated on penalties.

The club adapted well to Step 5 with a ninth-place finish in 2022/23 before Billy Shinners took charge ahead of the following campaign. During 2024, Stansfeld relocated to the Arctic Stadium, home of Cray Valley PM, but two difficult seasons ultimately ended with relegation back to the First Division at the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign.

Billy Shinners remains in charge for the 2026/27 season as Stansfeld look to regroup and mount an immediate challenge for promotion back to the Premier Division.
