Greenways Football Club – A History

Greenways Football Club was founded at the beginning of the 1965-66 season and played in Division 4 of the Gravesend Football League under the name NALGO F.C. The team ended the season as runners-up and were promoted. This was repeated in the 1966-67 season.

In the 1967-68 season the name was changed to Greenways F.C. The club became champions of Division 2 and were promoted again. In 1968-69 the club finished runners-up and were promoted for the fourth time in four seasons.

The premier division of the Gravesend Football League was won on seven occasions between 1974-88.Seventeen cup competitions were won during the same period, including the Kent Junior Cup Group ‘A’ on three occasions. In 1981 a reserve team was formed and had much success playing in the Gravesend Football League.

The 1986/87 stands out for many, the team won the Gravesend Premier League, the Mallinson Hosptial Cup & the Gordon Charity shield. What made it even more special was that the club went on to win the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield, an unbelievable achievement for a club playing out of the local leagues. The club then went to play in the Kent Senior Trophy for the first time and knocked out higher league opposition in Alma Swanley (Kent League) and RASRA (Spartan League) before eventually losing a closely fought tie to Corinthians who were plying their trade in the Beaver Homes league at that point.

The 1988-89 season saw a new challenge for the first team of Greenways F.C. when they applied to join the Kent County Football League. The team played in the Premier Division which they won in their first season as well as the Inter-Regional Challenge Cup.

The reserve team also entered the Kent County Football league in the 1992-93 season and were successful in winning the Reserve Division at their first attempt and the Reserve Cup the following season.

In the 2012-13 season Greenways lifted the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield for the second time and then lifted the Inter-Regional Challenge Cup in the 2016-17 season beating local rivals Punjab 1-0 at Chatham under the lights.

The club finished runners-up in the Kent County Premier league in successive seasons (2016-17 / 2017-18) before gaining promotion to the Southern Counties East Football League ahead of the 2018-19 Season. That first campaign at Step 6 ended in an impressive 10th placed finish before a high scoring season in 2019/20 ended early due to Coronovirus. The same occurred again in 2020/21 before 12th, then 11th finishing spots over the next two years.

In the 2023/24 Greenways finished at the bottom of the SCEFL First Division table. Relegation was avoided however and the Andy Pierce will now lead the side out for another Step 6 season.
