boardroom living room – Matt Smith
As I sit writing these notes isolated at home I am seriously concerned as to how long this pandemic will be around and how important these notes actually are. Yes I have sat and watched as the FA null and voided our season as if it did not occur, and yes I am not ashamed to write it made my blood boil. However, and this is a massive however, our lives and families wellbeing is far more important than anything I will talk about below. From everyone here at Sheppey United FC I implore you to stay indoors and stay safe and let us as a community come out of this pandemic stronger. I am sure at some point in the coming months the FA will release their plans for the 2020-21 season but until or if they do (my feeling is that we may not even compete next season given the timescales being discussed by the government), lets all stay safe and do all we can as a community to look after the less fortunate and able amongst us.
As our fourth season back in the Southern Counties East Football League – Premier Division has come to a premature end, I believe that this season more than any other we have shown that we were one of the promotion candidates and could well have been celebrating promotion to the Isthmian League in April. Despite the season being ended early nobody can take away the memories of this season, from winning 1-0 down at Deal, in a game which had everything you can imagine in it – to beating top of the table Beckenham at Holm Park. All fantastic memories created for us by a magnificent team put together by Ernie and Jono. In my last ever programme notes last season (2018-19) I wrote about my guilt at not providing the management with the necessary platform to construct a title winning team given my time away from the club. This season has shown that when the football is unified and we are all pushing hard we can compete with any team at our level.
It’s now time to turn my attention to thank you’s for the season, I will start by thanking Ernie, Jono and their entire management team along with the players for their commitment all season, Glenn and his management team along with all the development players for their commitment all season, my entire committee for their continued support throughout the season, the Gallery bar, Ites bar and tea bar staff, the Richards brothers for their great photos every week (and sterling work in the club shop by Paul), Wils for doing the PA and updating the Halfway fixture board, Kelvin for being Kelvin and always helping out, the EMU’s and lastly Keith for everything he does here at the football club. Lastly I would like to say a massive thank you to all our valued club sponsors be that from player sponsorship through to the stadium sponsorship, without your financial support the club would not operate in the manner it does. If I have missed anyone I am sorry but I thank you on behalf of Sheppey United Football Club. The most important and whole hearted THANK YOU is saved for all of you, the supporters that make this great club what it is, without your continued backing and support the football club would not be what we are today.
As you can imagine planning has already begun for a next season (whenever that may be), and whilst I am gutted by the news that Paul Rogers is leaving us (don’t be a stranger at the club Mr Rogers) I am also excited with the plans we have – from card payments to new kits and sponsors. At this time although we all miss football, it is not truly not important. The safety and health of your families and loved ones should be our number one priority. Rest assured, Sheppey United FC will continue after this disaster and in our 130th year continue to provide football and fun for all at our newly christened TOTAL POWER STADIUM – HOLM PARK.
Best Wishes and Keep Safe!
