Match Report from James Main

Ruaridh Donaldson scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for National League South side Hampton & Richmond at Corinthian today in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round.

With the National League season only starting today, it was the visitors’ first competitive outing this season and Corinthian sure gave them a good run for their money meaning the three-division difference between the two sides wasn’t obvious at times.

Hampton & Richmond dominated much of the first half with the majority of chances – their first significant one coming in the 14th minute when Niko Muir’s strong effort brought about a good diving save from home ‘keeper Aiden Prall.

The impressive Ryan Hill, who had bags of pace, nearly scored ten minutes later but once again Prall saved well to his right.

In the 29th minute Corinthian’s first chance came when Josh James’ shot was parried by visiting ‘keeper Alan Julian and the defence managed to clear the ball away just in time.

Just moments later, Hampton & Richmond went up the other end and scored after Jake Gray’s shot was pushed into the path of Donaldson who slotted home into the open goal.

In the 53rd minute the Beavers had a golden opportunity to score when Corinthian defender Jamie Billings gifted the ball to Muir and he tried to lob Prall but the ‘keeper tracked back and managed to tip it over the bar.

The hosts stepped up their efforts in the last half hour of the game but chances were still few and far between. Billings had a free kick that was pushed wide by Julian in the 60th minute, and they had no real luck.

Hampton & Richmond nearly put the game to bed two minutes from time when Hill was on the receiving end of a good ball but his shot was saved by Prall.

The result ends Corinthian’s FA Cup run of four games as the visitors progress to the next round.
