Saturday 8th February
Sea Pioneer SCEFL First Division
Rusthall are the new leaders as they capitalised on others dropping points by gaining 3 themselves to move into the top spot. Lewisham Borough were no match for the Rustics who raced into a 3-0 lead at the break thanks to goals from Robbie Bissett, Charlie Clover and Ryan Styles. No further goals were scored but none were needed for the visitors with the hard work done and now they can look down at the rest from their new lofty perch.
0-1 – Robbie Bissett – 6mins
0-2 – Charlie Clover – 10mins
0-3 – Ryan Styles – 20mins
Match Report – Jamie Poole, Rusthall
A blistering opening 20 minutes that saw the Rustics race into a 3-0 lead against a spirited Lewisham side, was enough to secure all 3 points and send us to the top of the table, after leaders Kennington were held to a 1-1 draw by title favorites Holmesdale.
Leading scorer Luke Adams returned from injury to lead the attack with Charlie Clover and Robbie Bissett back from suspension in the heart of the defence.
The lads adapted to the uneven surface at the Ladywell Arena well and put the home side under pressure from the start and took the lead on just 6 minutes, from their third corner Tommy Lawrence’s superb delivery was met by Bissett and his glancing header gave the home keeper no chance for his first goal of the season.
Just 4 minutes later it was 2-0, great work by Steve Camacho on the left saw Clover race forward and despite not hitting his shot that well it still managed to find its way into the net. We looked capable of scoring every time we attacked, especially from the corners and free kicks expertly delivered by Lawrence.
On 20 minutes it was 3-0, another fine corner from the left by Tommy Lawrence found central defender Ryan ‘Lenny’ Styles running in at the far post and his bullet header literally flew into the net!
To their credit, Lewisham battled away but had no answer to our pace, but did manage to prevent the Rustics adding to the score before the interval.
The second half was one to forget, with the lads seemingly happy that they had secured the points and Lewisham lacking the ability to break down the superb back line, although they did go close on 71 minutes, but keeper Billy Johnson made a superb one handed save.
Approacing the business part of the season, we know that every game is like a cup final and now have 10 games to play starting on Saturday with a crucial away game at 4th placed Holmesdale, who have games in hand on all the sides around them.
Manager, Jimmy Anderson was delighted to sign Jack Harris on Friday and the ex-Tunbridge Wells, Hastings United, Maidstone United and Glebe striker is likely to go into the squad for the Holmesdale game.
