It’s Ladies Day at AFC Croydon!
AFC Croydon Athletic’s next home game will be their inaugural ‘Ladies Day’ to acknowledge the role that women play within the club.
To celebrate ‘Ladies Day’ they will be offering free entry to all women that attend this Saturday’s game against Bearsted!
Via the Club Website the Rams have given praise to the women within the club that play a key role in the day-to-day running of AFC Croydon.
With the games coming thick and fast at Mayfield Stadium, it is important to reflect on and thank the volunteers that mucked in over the summer during our weekly Working Parties. Those valiant efforts are the reason why both AFC Croydon Athletic and Balham FC (our groundshare partner) can now host games at the ground and host them safely. In keeping with Ladies’ Day, we would particularly like to shine a spotlight on the women at the club who continue to play an integral role in such preparations. We’ve heard from both Barbara Powell (Director) and Keira Godwin (volunteer, season ticket holder and occasional match day photographer):
Barbara Powell – “Since I met Alan (Barbara’s husband and Vice-Chairman), he’s always been ‘football mad’ and so it was just a matter of time before I became involved with AFC Croydon Athletic. It’s really a case of ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join em!” Along with Carol McCue, I prepare hospitality at the club on match days along. I help with preparing and repairing kit as required and in the close season, I muck in with the plenty of jobs that need doing in during the season – whether that be painting, cleaning or weeding. It’s a matter of pitching in and working with everyone to get it all ready!”
Keira Godwin’s recent painting exploits have seen management and substitutes welcomed into freshly painted dugouts. She told us: “AFC Croydon Athletic is like a family. From my first game, everybody welcomed me with open arms and so I feel the least I can do is repay their kindness and generosity by helping to bring things back up to scratch for when the football starts again. Plus I enjoy making things look beautiful, even if that does mean painting dugouts in the blazing sun!
I see the potential for AFC to be a beacon of the Croydon community. This is already well underway given the expanding youth section, and I hope that the friends and families of all those involved in the club, through all ages and levels, see AFC as the shining light that I do.”
As the club continues to grow and diversify, we’re pleased to see our new Under 13 girls team along with our first female coach in Emily and many other helping behind the scenes.
