This super weekend of FA Vase football got underway on Friday night with Canterbury City hosting FC Elmstead at Salters Lane. This was followed by 22 games on Saturday plus we had a further 2 fixtures on Sunday.
From the 25 matches played in total we have an incredible 20 teams progressing to the next round.
Added to the 8 sides that received byes we are already hopeful of another successful year in this great competition.
It all started on Friday night when Canterbury City beat FC Elmstead 5-0.
5 goals from 5 different scorers for City and they will next visit Tunbridge Wells who were one of our three penalty shoot-out winners on Saturday.
Croydon were the others to succeed from spot-kicks. Their entertaining game at Broadbridge Heath finished 3-3 before, just like Tunbridge Wells, they held their nerve best to take a 6-5 sudden death win.
Tower Hamlets had one of the most eye-catching results of the round. Trailing 1-0 at Balham FC, Wale Odedoyin scored twice late on and Hamlets go through.
Forest Hill Park were 3-0 victors at Billingshurst with Emmanuel Olayinka converting a couple of penalties and Jason Johns getting the third.
Fisher left it late but got past Bearsted thanks to a Malaki Coker goal while Sheppey United also picked up a 1-0 win thanks to super sub James Jeffery.
Bridon Ropes also left Eastbourne in a good mood with Ladic Melconian again among the goals for them in a 3-0 win against ‘Town’.
Erith Town won an all-SCEFL game at home to SC Thamesmead with Steadman Callender and Alfie Eldridge both on the scoresheet while Crowborough Athletic also pipped their local friends and rivals 2-0 thanks to a double from Dom Cole at Rusthall.
Erith & Belvedere conceded early at Lingfield but still won after Calum McGeehan levelled and Henry Dasofunjo scored the winner. The Deres will visit Loxwood next who beat competition debutants Faversham Strike force by a solitary goal.
Staplehurst Monarchs were also playing FA Vase game number one, but their journey isn’t over yet as they came out best in a 5-goal thriller with Sporting Bengal.
A dominant performance from Lordswood meant they cruised past Storrington 4-0. Kyle McDowell scored twice, Jake Creed and Jack Muir got the others.
A strong second half saw Welling Town get past Oakwood while Stansfeld were strong throughout as the sent Bagshot out of the competition.
Rochester United overcame Premier Division Hollands & Blair at Rede Court Road. Reece Gillies set them on the way to a memorable 3-2 win.
Sutton Athletic will next visit Snodland Town after both came through their first Qualifying Round ties today. Arlie Desanges scored twice in a 4-2 win for Sutton against Newhaven while Ted Rosetti was the star for Snodland at Division rivals Westside.
In the late kick-off game Lydd Town scored a last minute leveller to send their match with Greenways to a penalty shoot-out. The hosts may have lost their earlier lead but they won from the spot and next they will host Forest Hill Park in a couple of weeks time.
Of the defeats, Larkfield & New Hythe will be hurting most as they led 2-0 with a minute left on the clock before Epsom & Ewell performed a miracle comeback to knock our Vase debutants out.
Glebe rounded off an excellent weekend for the SCEFL in this competition when beating Coggeshall United 3-1 on Sunday. Brad Wilson scored from over 40 yards, adding to strikes from Charlie Penny and Antone Douglas.
SCEFL teams receiving byes to the Second Qualifying Round were Kent Football Utd, Punjab United, Holmesdale, Meridian VP and Chessington & Hook Utd.
Previous good performances mean that Chatham Town, Deal Town and Kennington will enter at the First Round Proper stage.
