Croydon switch to Crystal Palace

Croydon FC have announced that the National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace will be their temporary new home ground.

With their usual residence closed due to Covid the ‘Trams’ needed to find a new temporary home and they have now revealed that the National Sports Centre will be it.

This stadium was built in 1964 on the site of a football ground that staged the FA Cup final between 1895 to 1914.

Crystal Palace FC were formed in 1905 to play at the original ground and only moved in 1915 due to the ground being commandeered by the military due to World War I, eventually settling at Selhurst Park in 1924.

The athletics stadium has a capacity of 15,500, which can be increased to 24,000 with temporary seating, however with a restriction to 300 fans under current guidelines the additional space will not be necessary just yet.

As well as sporting events, the stadium has played host to a number of live open air concerts, by artists such as Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen, Sex Pistols and Depeche Mode.

More recently SCEFL fans may remember that a former team of ours, AC London, used to play there – but the less said about them the better we feel.

Croydon have started the season well despite having to play ‘Away’ each time but now with a new base the Fixture Secretaries of both the League and the Club are busy working out dates for when the Trams can finally play a 2020/21 Season game at ‘Home’.
